A MESSAGE FROM THE AADEP PRESIDENT
Dear AADEP Fellows and Members:
Your board would like to make you aware of our recent communications with the American Medical Association (AMA).
The board of the AADEP has approached the AMA regarding the possibility of providing editorial guidance for the next edition of the Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (the Guides).
We (AADEP) realized that having a professional organization as the “editor” would be a paradigm shift from previous editions. However, since AADEP is the premiere society, serving physicians involved in disability management; we are active teachers of management, impairment and disability evaluations; and since many physicians, other health care providers, attorneys, regulators, legislators and others involved in the care of the disabled look to us for leadership, we felt it appropriate to offer our unique multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach to this arena.
Supporting considerations include:
The board of the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians recommends editorship of the AMA Guides 7th edition be undertaken by AADEP, a medical society seated within the AMA House of Delegates.
AADEP is a not-for-profit corporation composed of over 1,000 Fellows and members. AADEP faculty and membership are globally active in the impairment and disability arena. They have been prominent contributors to all previous editions of the AMA Guides.
AADEP international faculty members cover the broad spectrum of the subject matter of the AMA Guides. AADEP volunteer faculty teaches application of all editions in current use. AADEP is an ACCME accredited CME provider for physician learners and other participants.
AADEP examinations currently test the understanding and use of the 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of the AMA Guides. Our record of ongoing collegial and cooperative relationships with all stakeholders recommends AADEP to the task of editorship of the AMA Guides 7th edition.
We look forward to developing a greater transparency and openness to the process and methodology for the future editions. We continue to explore options for cooperative interaction with the AMA. We will keep you apprised of future developments.
Sincerely,

J. Mark Melhorn, MD, FAADEP—AADEP President
